Schí:ya Construction Ltd.: Building Futures

Schí:ya Construction Ltd.: Building Futures

SEABIRD ISLAND RESERVE - Nestled within the Seabird Island Band Reserve, Schí:ya Construction Ltd. is committed to enhancing the lives of community members through affordable and sustainable housing solutions. Indigenous-owned and operated, the company takes great pride in uniting tradition with innovation in its services. From the initial design concept to the finishing touches, Schí:ya is not just building houses – they’re building futures.

The idea for Schí:ya came when former Seabird Island Band Councillor, Mathew (Mat) Point Jr., recognized the need for on-Reserve housing. Like many First Nations Reserves, Seabird was suffering from a lack of affordable, safe, and high-quality housing. Mat knew his idea was viable, but he quickly faced a multitude of challenges including access capital to purchase equipment, regulatory hurdles, skills and training for management and employees, existing competition, sustainability and environmental considerations and exponential inflating pricing on building materials.

The solution? Connecting with Stó:lō Community Futures (SCF). With feedback and guidance from the SCF staff, Mat developed his business plan, which included a project-based cash flow and break-even analysis. In addition to business advising and connections to other CF services, SCF also provided funding for working capital and equipment purchases. With a business plan, capital, and confidence, Mat was ready to take the next steps with Schí:ya and launched the business in 2021.

"It started when I could no longer turn my head from the housing crisis in my own community and the immense need for improved conditions and for new builds to help overcome overcrowding." – Mat Point, Owner

Today, Schí:ya offers homebuilding, renovation, and remodelling services and continues to grow their services. The company employs a team of talented tradespeople, many of whom live on-reserve, and who share a passion for increasing the standard of living in their local communities. The business often collaborates with local programs and initiatives to beautify communal areas and help community members access financing to build, renovate, or remodel their homes. SCF was able to access the New Relationship Trust Equity Match program, which aided the businesses in purchasing office equipment and small tools; making maintenance and small repairs on vehicles, and expanding the business marketing efforts through sponsorship of community youth and soccer programs. Schí:ya is also committed to protecting the land and uses recycled, repurposed, and eco-friendly materials whenever possible, including environmentally friendly, energy-efficient supplies, and strictly adhering to conservation restrictions.

The business has operated successfully for almost four years and has completed many new homes, renovation, and remodel projects, on and off-reserve. The business recently expanded its office location, has developed strong relationships with local suppliers, and expanded its staff to twelve full-time employees, four part-time employees, and an administrative staff of four. Owner Mat Point has also connected with local Indigenous entrepreneurs and trades, to build the business network and provide mentorship to other Indigenous entrepreneurs.
